Deny You Were Ever There! – “Thoughtlines” – Bob Carr

We appreciate the irony that Roosevelt had won office in 1932 with a conservative commitments to balance the budget made in a campaign speech in Pittsburgh. Prepare a draft that explains why I made that commitment, Roosevelt said to his speech writers in 1936. They thought about it. Shaking his head, speechwriter Sam Rosenam advised, ‘Deny you were ever in Pittsburgh.’
