Isaiah Berlin – “The Crooked Timber of Humanity” cited in “Thoughtlines” – Bob Carr

The Search for perfection does seem to me a recipe for blood-shed, no better even if it is demanded by the sincerest of idealists, the purest of hear. No more rigorous moralist that Immanuel Kant has ever lived, but even he said, in a moment of illumination, ‘out of the crooked timber of humanity no straight thing was ever made’. To force people into neat uniforms demanded by dogmatically believed-in schemes is almost always the road to inhumanity.
