Stoicism – “Thoughtlines” – Bob Carr

June 17th, 2011 · No Comments · Humanism, Philosophy, Politics

The Stoicism that shaped the Meditations is, according to Staniforth, one root of Christian thought. The appeal of the original is the way the themes and images of Aurelius hypnotically recycle themselves. Here, for example, he returns to the abyss:

“Think of the myriad enmities, suspicions, animosities and conflicts that are now vanished with the dust and ashes of men who knew them and fret no more… mark how hollow are the echoes of applause… how puny the arena of human ‘fame’… Even eminently virtuous men… should know no rebirth after their death, but be doomed to utter extinction.”
