“Ideas that have harmed Mankind” – Bertrand Russell

I think perhaps one of the wisest things ever said was when Cromwell said to the Scots before the battle of Dunbar: ‘I beseech you in the bowels of Christ, think it possible that you may be mistaken.’ But the Scots did not, and so he had to defeat them in battle. It is a pity that Cromwell never addressed the same remark to himself. Most of the greatest evils that man has inflicted upon man have come through people feeling quite certain about something which, in fact, was false. To know the truth is more difficult than most men suppose, and to act with ruthless determination in the belief that truth is the monopoly of their party is to invite disaster.
