Notation – “The Music Instinct : How Music Works and Why We Can’t Do Without It” – Philip Ball

There is very little that is preordained in this palette – contrary to common belief, it is not determined by nature. We are free to choose the notes of music, and that’s what makes the choices interesting. They crystallized in Western music into the notes of the modern piano, which repeat in octave cycles with twelve notes each. Not everyone accedes to that arrangement.
