It is said that as a young man Temuchin, later to be known as Genghis Khan, was discussing with his companions the question of the greatest joy in human life. Some proposed hunting or hawking, but Temuchin said,

“The greatest joy that a man can know is to conquer his enemies and drive them before him, to ride their horses and deprive them of their possessions, to make their beloved weep, and to embrace their wives and daughters.
